Mumbai: Mumbai Climate Week commenced on a
significant note as actor, producer and UN Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza
participated in the inaugural event, joining climate leaders, policymakers,
entrepreneurs and sustainability advocates from across India and the Global
South.
As part of the opening day proceedings, Dia Mirza
moderated a panel discussion *Rewriting the Climate Future* featuring Rajiv
Shah, President at The Rockefeller Foundation, and Mridula Ramesh, founder of
the Sundaram Climate Institute.
Speaking about the significance of global platforms
such as Mumbai Climate Week, Dia shared, “Climate action is no longer a distant
policy conversation. It is about the air we breathe, the water we depend on,
and the dignity of communities already living with climate impact. Platforms
like Mumbai Climate Week create the courage and collaboration we need to turn
urgency into accountability and innovation into inclusion.”
Later in the day, Dia Mirza introduced the team
from The Earthshot Prize, the global environmental award founded by Prince
William to accelerate innovative solutions to pressing environmental
challenges. The audience was also presented with a special video message from
Prince William, underscoring global collaboration and India’s growing
leadership in climate innovation.
Organised by Project Mumbai in partnership with the
Government of Maharashtra and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the
three-day summit is hosted at the Jio World Cultural Centre in BKC, focusing on
sustainability, renewable energy, electric mobility and climate resilience,
with parallel city-wide engagements throughout the week. As one of the world’s
most climate-vulnerable megacities, Mumbai’s role in advancing climate
resilience is increasingly critical. Mumbai Climate Week marks the beginning of
a series of discussions and initiatives focused on strengthening urban
sustainability frameworks and scalable climate action.
With participation from civic bodies, global
foundations, industry leaders and grassroots organisations, Mumbai Climate Week
seeks to position the city as a vital hub for climate discourse and action in
South Asia.
