Yash
Chopra's second film as director after 'Deewar', 'Kabhi Kabhie' redefined
Amitabh Bachchan's 'angry young man' image to that of a romantic hero. A
classic memorable for its poetry and music, apart from the standout
performances of its stellar starcast, this story of unrequited love and
sacrifice was a box office record breaker after it released on February 27,
1976.
Amit
Malhotra (Amitabh) is in love with fellow student (Rakhee) but her parents
get her married off to Vijay Khanna (Shashi) an architect. A heartbroken
Amit returns home and joins his father's construction business and later
marries Anjali (Waheeda) with who he has a daughter Sweety.
Unknown to
him Anjali has a daughter Pinky (Neetu) from a previous relationship who is now
adopted by the childless RP Kapoor (Parikshit Sahni) and his wife. However when
Pinky comes to know that she had been adopted she traces Anjali and turns up at
Anjali's place in search of answers.
Meanwhile
Pooja and Vijay now a happily married couple have a son Vikram (Rishi) who
falls for Pinky. Amit is keen on Vikram marrying his daughter Sweety, but
Vikram only has eyes for Pinky.
Anjali
eventually accepts Pinky is her daughter but keeps it secret from Amit fearing
her marriage could break as a result.
Who
does Vikram marry and what is Amit's reaction when he comes to know of Pinky's
existence forms the rest of the story.
Kabhi
Kabhie featured an immortal score by Khayyam with poetic lyrics by Sahir
Ludhianvi. Gems like Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein, Main pal do pal ka shayar
hoon, Tere chehre se nazar nahin hathti and tere phoolon jaisa rang are still
popular and hummed by people across generations. Both Khayyam and lyricist
Sahir Ludhianvi bagged the best music and best lyricist awards respectively at
the 1977 Filmfare Awards.
Interestingly
it was on the sets of 'Kabhi Kabhie' that Rishi Kapoor fell in love with Neetu
Singh.
Parveen
Babi was originally supposed to play the role opposite Rishi, but for some
unknown reason Chopra replaced her with Neetu. A guilty Yash Chopra later made
it up to her and signed her on for Kaala Patthar.
Shot
beautifully in Kashmir, Chopra brought the entire starcast and their families
to the Paradise on Earth, even using family members as extras in the wedding
sequences! Chopra described the making of 'Kabhi Kabhie' as one of his happiest
experiences with the production as one long honeymoon.
