Directed by: Anubhav Sinha
Director Anubhav Sinha off late has made some impactful films like Mulk
(2018), Thappad (2020) and now he makes another one - Assi where every 20
minutes a girl is reported raped. Sinha shocks you with a captivating story
which not only focuses on the victim’s family but also focuses on the female
members and families of the rapists too. The opening of the film is brutal and
disturbing. Yet to the credit of Sinha, the scene leave a painful effect on you
and does not titillate at all. Certain subplots are needless hence deviating
from the main plot. Also treatment of some scenes are uneven and doesn’t gel
with the flow of the film.
The film opens with a semi nude rape victim who later we come to know is
a school teacher named Parima (Kani Kusruti) who lives with her husband Vinay (
Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub) and son Dhruv (Advik Jaiswal) in Delhi. One night after
her colleague’s retirement party, she is abducted by a group of friends and is
gang-raped for the next two hours and then thrown near a railway track by
them. The rapists run away, destroy all the evidences and in connivance with
the local police their DNA samples too. Vinay’s colleague Kartik (Kumud
Mishra) is a very close friend of Raavi (Taapsee Pannu) who is a lawyer, asks
her to take up the case. Does the victim gets justice forms the rest of the
film.
Taapsee Pannu is in superb form. See her in the climax. After a long
time one gets to see her on the screen and in her elements. Kani Kusruti
delivers yet another exceptional performance. She is the mainstay of the film.
Revathy as Judge Vasudha is good and so is Manoj Pahwa as Nikki’s father. Kumud
Mishra as Kartik does justice to his role. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub is adorable and
gives a strong silent performance. As the senior inspector Rajendra Sethi is
good and so is Jatin Goswami as ASI Sanjay. Satyajit Sharma as defence lawyer
Navrattan gives an able performance. Child actor Advik Jaiswal is wonderful.
There are impressive cameos by Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak & Seema
Pahwa. They all leave a mark.
As like his other film Mulk, Anubhav Sinha makes yet another
hard-hitting courtroom unsettling drama with good performances. But
the film has a lot of rough edges which were quite unnecessary and could have
done away with.
