Rakesh Kumar’s ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’ is a hilarious
action comedy film that never seems to grow old. Released on February 10, 1980, the film has Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan playing conmen with Parveen Babi
and Hema Malini as their love interests. The comic sequences and the lilting
music by Rajesh Roshan were other highlights of the film. It is also remembered
for the opening credits in The Pink Panther style featuring cartoons of Amitabh
and Shashi on a robbing spree.
Though it was a flop when it was released Do Aur Do
Panch has achieved cult status over the years as one of the most entertaining
films of the Amit-Shashi pairing showcasing their superb comic timing and
chemistry.
Amitabh (Vijay) and Shashi (Sunil) are petty burglars
and sworn enemies. Both are tasked by their bosses with kidnapping Seth Mathur’s
(Shreeram Lagoo) son Bitto from his boarding school for a huge ransom. While Vijay
goes as Ram, a PE teacher, Sunil comes as Lakshman, a music teacher. Even as
the two go about getting close to Bittu, they leave no stone unturned to make
life difficult for each other with the many pranks they play with hilarious consequences.
At the same time Vijay starts falling for Anju (Parveen) the principal’s (Sajjan)
daughter while Sunil falls for Shalu (Hema) the dance teacher. They also
develop genuine feelings for Bitto, giving up on their plan to abduct him. However, Sunil’s boss Uncle Jagdish (Kader) turns up at the school with his henchmen to
do the deed himself. How Vijay and Sunil join hands to save Bittu forms the
rest of the story.
A clean, simple entertainer featuring howlarious comic sequences between the two male leads makes Do Aur Do Panch a must-watch again film. And don't forget to watch out for Kader Khan at his villainous best in the same costume throughout the film!
