A film that leaves you with a lump in your throat

Cast: Akshay Kumar, introducing Veer Pahariya, Sara Ali Khan, Nimrat Kaur (special appearance), Sharad Kelkar, Manish Chaudhri

Rating: 3.5*

Directors Sandeep Kewlani & Abhishek Anil Kapur do a very neat job in directing their first film. There are no frivolous happenings and they take the film forward with the first scene itself. They do not waste a single moment. Kudos to the writers (Carl Austin, Aamil Keeyan Khan, and Sandeep Kewlani) who stuck to the story without distractions, with definite characterizations, and kept the emotional quotient high. This is one chapter in history (based on true facts) that is told in a very thrilling way. Yes despite a drop in the second half they up the ante quickly. The best part is reserved in the climax where the audience is bound to shed tears. The film scores heavily in the last 20 minutes or so. However, the film which should have had clapworthy moments is devoid of that thus making the film less exhilarating which should have been right from the beginning.

Circa 1965 where India and Pakistan are at war. Indian Airforce Group Captain Om Ahuja (Akshay Kumar) is stationed at Jalandhar at the Adampur Air Base. He shares a very close bond with Squadron Leader T Krishnan Ahuja aka Tabby (Veer Pahariya). Tabby's wife Geeta (Sara Ali Khan) is pregnant with their first child. Ahuja is asked to do a recce by commander David Lawrence (Manish Chaudhari) about the preparations by the Pakistani forces. Ahuja and Tabby enter the Pakistani territory where they are attacked but they hit back. They come back after clicking photographs of the Pakistani artillery and warn the Indian forces to be prepared. But their request is not taken seriously and the orders are kept pending from Delhi. The Pakistanis attack with their fast-paced American Starstriker planes and blow up the Indian base. In retaliation, Ahuja and his team, the Tiger Squadron, attack at Sargodha air base in the heart of Pakistan. But in Tabby goes missing in this battle.

Akshay Kumar, for once, does justice to the emotional scenes and gives a praiseworthy performance. Veer Pahariya making his debut is good and will be adored by the audience. Sara Ali Khan is commendable and Nimrat Kaur (in a special appearance) as Ahuja's wife Preeti leaves a mark. Both, though, have limited screen time. Sharad Kelkar as Pakistan's Squadron Leader is wonderful. Manish Chaudhri is fair and so is Sohum Majumdar as Debashish Chatterjee aka Cockroach.

Tanishk Bagchi's music reminds one of the songs of the film Kesari (2019) especially 'Maaye' which sounds so much like 'Teri Mitti'.

The film scores heavily on the emotional quotient along with the spectacular air sequences and action. In the beginning, one might wonder about the similarities with Hrithik Roshan's Fighter (2024), but once the film settles down quickly, the similarities become distant.
