Jodhpur Park Saradiya Utsav Committee has come up with the unique theme of “Punarjanma: Rebirth” for this year’s Durgotsav. Now in its 71st year, the committee members will kick off the celebrations on October 1 with an eye donation camp. An eye check-up camp too will be held for those who want to check the health of their eyes said Sumanta Roy puja committee general secretary at a press meet at Press Club on Thursday.
Renowned eye surgeon and president of
the Utsav committee Dr Abhijeet Sen said cornea blindness is among the most common
eye diseases which plague people. There is a shortage of cornea as not many people
come forward to donate their corneas after they die. The puja this year will create
awareness about this to encourage more people to come forward and donate their
corneas. Artist Bapai Sen said just like blood donation camps where people donate
blood to save lives, why can’t people come forward to donate their eyes. It
will be a rebirth for both the giver who will live on in someone else’s body and
will give a new life to the blind person by giving that person vision to see
the world. Sen also pledged to donate his eyes at the camp.
The theme song on rebirth has been sung
by Moushumi Das and Sreya Banerjee with music and lyrics by Debtonu Dutta and
Subhojit Santra.
The committee is also spreading awareness
about dengue and malaria by putting up banners and keeping the area free of stagnant
water and garbage.
The puja will be inaugurated on Mahalaya,
October 14 by the chief minister Mamata Banerjee when she will also release the
theme song.
