“Twisters” is an audience pleaser — it sticks to the age-old formula and incorporates it into the story pretty well — and is entertaining. There’s not a single second wasted in the film, every scene amounts to something later on — and though there is a little too much exposition in this, it never gets irritating — and so do the characters: there’s not a single unimportant character in the film. “Twisters” is what you call a popcorn film.
The film has its fair share of flaws as well: the film is, ultimately, hollow (in terms of its subtext on capitalism and PTSD) and the characters (except for Kate) aren’t fleshed out beyond a certain point (which is, often, the bare minimum).
The film’s visual effects are good and don’t distract you from the story: they feel real enough in terms of the film. The film’s camerawork is also good, putting you, essentially, on the edge of the seat at times. The music choices feel a little out of place but, weirdly enough, works.
The direction from filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (director of the 2020 film “Minari”) is commendable but leaves a lot to be desired, making the film feel like a studio film eventually — which it is, proudly so. The performances are good all around, but this is Daisy Edgar-Jones’ film through and through. I love her performance in “Normal People”, so I, kind of, had high expectations from her, and she didn’t disappoint. She gives, easily, the best performance in the film, followed by Glen Powell, who is extremely charming as the hillbilly Tyler. Their romance arc felt a little unnecessary but was ultimately rewarding.
“Twisters” may not be the ideal summer blockbuster.
As storm season intensifies, the paths of former storm chaser Kate Carter and reckless social-media superstar Tyler Owens collide when terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed. The pair and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
