Dr. S Vidyadhara, HOD & consultant, spine surgery, spine care, Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, was in Kolkata a few days ago to interact with the media about the innovations in spine surgeries. Accompanying him were some patients who had successfully undergone complicated surgeries and wanted to share their stories post-recovery.

Dr. Vidyadhara is the founder and pioneer in developing the spine care centre, the first of its kind in India at Manipal Hospital in 2008 and has been offering great surgical outcomes at par with international standards since then to patients from across the world with complex spinal disorders.

Dr Vidyadhara says, “In the past 15 years, we have treated all age groups of patients, uniformly with a success rate of more than 99%. We have performed over 12,850 surgeries so far. Today’s event is to share with you the post-surgical experience of people and how well they have integrated back to normal life.

The recovering patients included Suchanda Ghoshal who was operated on at the age of 15 years for complex severe thoracolumbar kyphoscoliosis (hunchback) by Dr. Vidyadhara over a decade ago, Chanda Chakravarthy, a tea-shop owner from Kolkata had came to Bangalore and underwent spinal surgery over 12 years ago. Not only did she recover well, but she also got back to work just after a month of surgery and still continues to work in her tea shop.  Rakhi underwent surgery for a tumour on her spinal bone over 8 years ago.

“There should be more centres of excellence for particular diseases,” said Dr Vidyadhara adding that focus should be on dedication to your work along with fixed salaries which will certainly enhance services rendered by doctors. “I feel that the technology is there but there should be a willingness on the part of the people to adopt it and learn.”
