Kolkata: Turning music into a powerful expression of compassion, Sudeshna Beacon of Hope (SBOH) has extended its continued support to Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute (SGCC&RI), Thakurpukur, with a donation of ₹12 lakh towards the treatment of children from economically disadvantaged families battling cancer.
The donation was made following the SBOH Concert 2026 – Melodies of Hope, held on 12 September at Mahanayak Uttam Mancha, Kolkata. The initiative reflects SBOH’s enduring commitment to bringing hope and support to children and families facing the challenges of cancer.
Founded in 2016 in memory of the late Sudeshna Ghosh, the 2026 edition marked the 11th annual SBOH Concert and celebrated a decade of the organisation’s humanitarian journey. Over the past ten years, SBOH has raised and contributed more than ₹60 lakh to SGCC&RI through musical initiatives in Kolkata and the Washington, D.C. region. The organisation has also supported childhood cancer research, including research undertaken by SGCC&RI in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
SBOH Founder Shuvashish Ghosh said, “SBOH was born out of a deeply personal loss, but over the years it has evolved into a movement of hope. We believe that music can become a meaningful way of standing beside children and families fighting cancer. This contribution of ₹12 lakh is another expression of that commitment. Our endeavour is to ensure that no child or family feels alone in their journey against cancer.”
The evening paid a special musical tribute to legendary composers S. D. Burman and R. D. Burman, with performances by Jojo Mukherjee, Monomoy Bhattacharya, Hridha Debraj, Swarnali Basu and Debmalya Chattopadhyay. Jazz artiste Sucheta Sanyal, along with young artistes Rohini Vohs Desai and Shloka Subramaniam, also performed.
A particularly moving highlight of the evening was a dance performance by cancer survivor Anjali Ray. Having lost one leg to cancer at the age of 14, Anjali continued to pursue her passion for dance. Her performance became a powerful symbol of courage, resilience and the triumph of the human spirit.
The concert also featured Shohan Ghosh, son of the late Sudeshna Ghosh and Shuvashish Ghosh, who brought a deeply personal dimension to the evening. With music, memories and a shared humanitarian purpose coming together on one stage, Melodies of Hope reaffirmed SBOH’s belief that music can transcend entertainment and become a force for compassion, solidarity and hope.
