When Sanjay Dutt came back after his rehab stint, his best buddy Kumar Gaurav offered him ‘Naam’ to be helmed by Mahesh Bhatt who had given Gaurav the brilliant ‘Janam’ (1985). Scripted by Salim Khan, it was his first independent story after his breakup from Javed Akhtar. When Rajendra Kumar heard the script, he wanted changes to give Gaurav the author backed role as he felt that Dutt will hog all the limelight. But Khan foot his foot down and went along with his own conviction. Dutt delivered one of his best performances which showed his emotional range and vulnerable side too. But despite being a Dutt show, Kumar Gaurav also gave a powerful and brilliant performance as the silent and loving brother. It was another feather-in-the-cap performance after ‘Janam’ for Gaurav.
‘Naam’ released on September 12, 1986 forged a lifelong partnership between Bhatt & Dutt who subsequently delivered hits in the years to follow.
Ravi ( Kumar Gaurav) and Vicky (Sanjay Dutt) are the sons of Janki ( Nutan) who tries hard to make both ends meet. Ravi is hard working and works as a secretary cum typist in a private firm to earn for the family. He sacrifices a lot for his younger wayward brother Vicky, who is determined to go to Dubai at any cost for a living. Ravi somehow manages to arrange the money, passport and visa for Vicky. Upon landing in Dubai, Vicky gets cheated and his passport is confiscated as it was fake. The only way to survive in Dubai was to work for a dreaded and ruthless smuggler Rana ( Paresh Rawal).
Nutan gives a nuanced performance and the scene when Vicky leaves for Dubai is truly memorable. Poonam Dhillon as Seema Rai, Ravi’s love interest doesn’t have much scope but as Rita, wife of Vicky, Amrita Singh gives a wonderful performance. Akash Khurana (Aftab Ahmed) & Rita Rani Kaul (Saira Ahmed) Vicky’s friends in Dubai give adorable performances.
Mahesh Bhatt gives his most ‘commercial’ film (until then) and combining forces with writer Salim Khan & editor David Dhawan takes this adaptation of ‘Deewaar’ (1975) to dizzying heights. Laxmikant Pyarelal scores big with the cult ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’ sung by Pankaj Udhas and the lively ’Tu Kal Chala Jayega’.
‘Naam’ remains a milestone film for both Bhatt and Dutt and even after 40 years the film tugs at your heart.
