Remember that childhood comic series He-Man on TV
in the 1990s and that iconic theme song "Heeeman, by the power of
greyskullll!! And how avidly kids would wait to watch it every week.
Now here's a big screen version albeit with a
modern twist for all ye He-Man fans.
In Eternia young Prince Adam and friend Teela are
getting rigorous battle training under Teela's Father and chief of the royal
guard Duncan (Idris Alba). Evil warlock Skeletor (Jared Leto) attacks the
capital city Eternos, takes King Randor and Queen Marlena prisoners while Trap
Jaw grievous injures Duncan. The Guardian of Greyskull, the Sorceress (Morena
Baccarin), helps Adam escape through a portal to Earth, his mother's homeworld,
with the Sword of Power which the 10-year -old unfortunately loses as he comes
crashing down on Earth.
Fifteen years have passed. Adam is now working for
a human resources company in present day Oklahoma city obsessed with looking
for his lost sword which will take him home. When he manages to locate it in a
comic store he is attacked by Skeletor's lieutenant Beastman. Teela (Camila
Mendes) turns up to the rescue, and whisks him off to Eternia.
To his horror he sees Eternia is a burnt out shell,
his parents are prisoners and Skeletor is lording over his kingdom still
obsessed with getting his hands on the Sword of Power. Not only that, his
former subjects and gallant warriors refuse to even recognize him as the long
lost prince or even take him seriously.
Will Adam be able to rise to the occasion and
liberate his people and his parents from the evil Skeletor. And more
importantly is he able to come into his own and realize where his true strength
lies forms the rest of the story.
As Prince Adam Nicholas Galitzine brings a sense of
bashfulness and lost innocence as he negotiates his way from being a
"namby pamby" low-on-confidence boy to the larger-than-life He-Man,
the saviour of Eternia. Jared Leto as Skeletor sinks his teeth into the evil
role with relish even though we miss seeing his handsome face behind that
hideous skull. Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Skeletor's comrade in arms is
deliciously evil. Idris Elba is gracious as the brave warrior turned drunk
"Druncan". Camila Mendes as Teela gives able support as does the rest
of the cast. Special mention must be made about Kristen Wiig who gives voice to
Roboto who helps Adam in his quest to free his kingdom.
Don't leave till the final credit titles role. Two twists are in store for those who wait. And yes, He-Man will be back.
Enjoy with family and friends!!
