The Mumbai premiere of Ashvin Gidwani’s AGP World
musical Marry Go Round - Let’s Blame it on Bollywood opened to a packed house
and an electric response, marking a strong start to its India run after a
successful outing in Singapore. Held at the Tata Theatre, NCPA, the evening saw
an impressive turnout with filmmakers Ashutosh Gowariker and Kunal Kohli, actor
Tanuj Virwani, adman Prahlad Kakkar and producer Manish Goswami among those in
attendance. The cast, including Vidya Malavade - best known for Chak De! India;
Mohan Kapur - widely recognised for his performances in Happy New Year, Jolly
LLB and international projects like The Marvels; Apoorva Arora - known for OMG
- Oh My God! and popular The Viral Fever (TVF) shows; and Manyuu - an acting
coach at the National School of Drama, along with a 32-member ensemble and
director Bhavna Pani, were seen sharing a mix of excitement and nerves before
the curtains went up.
True to its premise, the musical dives headfirst
into the spectacle of the modern Indian wedding, capturing its scale, absurdity
and emotional undercurrents in equal measure. Blending humour with moments of
chaos, the narrative unfolds around a seemingly perfect wedding that steadily
unravels, bringing together clashing personalities, heightened expectations and
the pressure of appearances in a social media-driven world. The production
plays with the fine line between performance and reality, mirroring the larger-than-life
nature of contemporary celebrations.
Once the show began, the energy in the auditorium
was unmistakable, with audiences responding enthusiastically to the fast-paced
storytelling, music and choreography. Laughter, applause and spontaneous
reactions punctuated the performance, reflecting the relatability of its
characters and situations. Backed by a large ensemble and slick production
design, the musical maintains a high tempo while keeping its emotional beats
intact.
