Director Frank E Flowers makes an engaging and simple film. What keeps
you hooked is that no time is wasted in introductions. The story is linear with
absolute no twists and turns. But despite that the film manages to hold you
with its action which happens in an island and not on the ship.
Set in the year 1846, a ruthless pirate Captain Connor (Karl Urban) who
is looking for his supposedly stolen gold, takes Captain T H Bodden (Ismael
Cruz Cordova) hostage aboard their ship Swiftsure. Connor heads for Cayman
Brac, the place of residence of Bodden as the latter refuses to reveal anything
about the gold. At Brac, Bodden’s wife Ercell (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) stays
with her handicapped son Issac (Vedarten Naidoo) and sister-in- law Elizabeth
(Safia Oakley- Green). When Ercell is attacked by Connor and his men, to the
surprise of Elizabeth & Issac, Ercell fights and finishes off Connor’s gang
members. It is then her family comes to know that Ercell was a ex-pirate named Mariam
/ Bloody Mary. Does Connor get the gold and what happens Ercell and her
family forms the rest of the story.
The film belongs to Priyanka Chopra Jonas who is terrific in action
sequences. She also manages to hold her own amongst others and gets top
billing too. She is fantastic. As the antagonist, Karl Urban is the perfect
foil to Priyanka. Safia Oakley- Green and Ismael Cruz Cordova pass muster.
Vedanten Naidoo is fair.
The cinematography by Greg Baldi is spectacular and is a huge
plus.
The film though absolutely predictable to the core is racy and pacy with
stunning action.
