It is not easy being a woman. Apart from the struggles and pains she has to endure over the years both physical and mental managing both home and career and yet getting the flak for not being a boy, a woman also has to face the challenge of getting a decent washroom. A man can go anywhere to answer nature’s call but a woman needs some privacy for this basic function. Director Shibram Sharma’s film ‘Sunetra Sundaram’ revolves around this very relevant theme and the young director handles this complex yet simple issue with great sensitivity.
Sunetra
(Parno) has battled a kidney problem since childhood, necessitating her to go
to the washroom pretty often. A problem which sadly becomes the cause of losing both her parents in a car accident. She grows up in her grandmother’s
(Shakuntala Barua) house where she does her PhD and applies for a job in the
research company set up by her late parents. She wants to work her way up in
the company before taking up her rightful position. She ends up locking horns
with the MD Surja (Somraj Maity) who was her beloved childhood friend over the
absence of a separate woman’s toilet on the premises. This spurs her on to
fight for safe and hygienic washrooms in trains, offices and all public places.
Along the way she makes many supportive friends and gets back her lost love.
In the titular role, Parno Mittra puts her best foot forward as she takes up the cudgels for all those women who are fighting for the basic right to clean washrooms and Pee Independence. The rest of the starcast gives able support for a film which is watchable with a social message.
