Director Mainak Bhaumik tries hard to adapt the black comedy 'Shallow Grave' (1994 directed by Danny Boyle) and Sam Raimi's 'A Simple Plan' (1998) but ends up making a fool of himself. What made him make a mess of 'Bhaggyolokkhi' is anyone's guess. Yes, it is a dark comedy no doubt- the entire film is devoid of any artificial lights and looks too dark, leaving the audience laughing with the proceedings on screen. The two-hour film felt like an eternity to finish and we were left zapped by what hit us. Sad, as the director had given such wonderful films (Bibaho Diaries, Maach Mishti and More, etc) but this time he treads on a path that is not his genre.
A bored-with-each-other married couple (played by a thoroughly bored Ritwick Chakraborty and a one-expression Solanki Roy) are having differences in their marriage. To top it all the husband is kicked out of his journalist's job from his office. One night at a bar, he meets his school friend and brings him home for dinner. At night the friend is found dead with his red suitcase with Rs 10 crores in cash. The cash belonged to a politician and a gang lord (Loknath Dey) who are after the money. A CID officer (an over-the-top Sujan Mukherjee) is on their trail. A corrupt police officer (Subrat Dutta in limited screen time) and two cold-blooded killers form the others who are after the couple. Can the couple get out of this mess?
The actors literally sleepwalk through their respective roles. And what was Swastika Dutta doing in the film? She plays an actress in a serial called 'Bhaggyolokkhi' (what was the connection between her and the film title?) Anupam Roy's music is the same old repetitive melodies he churns out regularly. The shot-taking fails completely as Bhaumik tries only low angles which become an eyesore.
