A remake of Vijay's 'Theri' (2016), director Kalees's 'Baby John' is a completely massy film. The story is credited to Atlee who directed 'Theri' and also doubles up as a producer, hence the mass elements along with the commercial angle. There are a lot of seeti-maar scenes, especially the pre-interval scenes. But there are also some glitches in the form of the treatment. 'Theri' was nearly 8 years ago and the treatment could have been better in 'Baby John'. Moreover, the villain equation nowadays is parallel to that of the heroes (KGF 2, Leo, Pathaan, Jawan). The villain needed to be more powerful than the hero with a massive personality which is somewhat missing in 'Baby John', not to take anything away from the character of Nanaji though.
John D'Silva (Varun Dhawan) who runs a restaurant in Alappuzha, Kerala is a very protective father to a six-year-old daughter Khushi (Zara Zyanna). John is a doting father and goes all out to make his daughter happy. This makes Khushi's school teacher Tara (Wamiqa Gabbi) take a liking for John so much so that without John's knowledge she rescues a girl and files a complaint against a dreaded henchman Boss (Jaffer Sadiq). Boss assumes that it was John who had made the complaint and attacks him thinking him to be a common man. But John turns out to be ruthless and beats the pulp out of the goons. In the meanwhile, Tara finds out that John is actually a daring and dare-devil DCP Satya Verma married to Dr. Meera (Keerthy Suresh) but his life had turned upside down while confronting a powerful Don Nanaji (Jackie Shroff). Hence he has left the police force and is leading the life of an ordinary man.
As the titular character Baby John, Varun Dhawan comes up with his first full massy action film and puts in a commendable effort and also gets a thumbs up in the emotional scenes. Keerthy Suresh as Meera makes her Bollywood debut with this film. She is lovely and has a wonderful screen presence. In a supporting role as Tara, Wamiqa Gabbi comes up trumps. Jackie Shroff is superb as the menacing Nanaji. The kid Khushi played by Zara Zyanna is very cute and adorable. Rajpal Yadav as constable Ram Sevak comes out in a completely different avatar and does full justice to his character. Jaffer Saqiq (as Boss) and Sheeba Chaddha (as Satya's mother) are good but Prakash Belawadi (Commissioner Yashraj Mukherjee) and Zakir Hussain (as officer Baldev Patil) are strictly okay. Lastly, as Agent Bhai Jaan, Salman Khan entertains in a special appearance during the end credits. He is surely going to be loved by the audience.
Thaman S gives a solid background score. There are a lot of fight directors in this film making it truly a violent actioner and a massy entertainer uplifted by the bravura performance of Varun Dhawan.
