The Kolkata International Foundation for Arts, Literature, and Culture (KIFALC) held its first Short Film Festival 2024, on November 30 from 2 PM onwards. Held at the Kifalc venue it brought together filmmakers, artists, and film enthusiasts from across the city and beyond.

The Short Film Festival 2024 celebrates creativity and innovation in the realm of short filmmaking. The curator of the film festival acclaimed documentary filmmaker Indranil Sarkar said, “ It provides a unique platform for budding and established filmmakers to showcase their work, engage with audiences, and gain recognition for their artistic contributions. The festival aims to highlight the diversity and richness of short films, offering a curated selection of thought-provoking and inspiring works.

Prabal Kumar Basu, chairman of KIFALC, said Sunil Gangopadhyay, Samik Bandopadhyay, and Shankha Ghosh laid the concept for this art centre, which bore fruit earlier this year. After funds are arranged, a three-bigha space on EM Bypass will be developed into a centre.

Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay acclaimed film scholar and professor of film studies at Jadavpur University, appreciated the interdisciplinary approach of the centre towards amalgamating all the arts on one platform. In his opening talk, he spoke about how Hollywood taught us how to tell stories going on to make history and how films did away with the concept of space and time.

Indranil Sarkar said, "We got 30 films for the festival but the esteemed jury could select only nine due to time constraints."

Nine films were screened in three slots with breaks in between. They included Joke, Ku The Prejudice, I Want Ma, Chithi, Redacted, Secrets, Besan Ka Ladoo, Circle, and Protibimbo. All the directors were felicitated with a memento and a certificate after the screening of each film.

"KIFALC aims to hold several other festivals in the near future to create an audience as well as a market for the upliftment of the language called cinema," signed off Sarkar.
