When you go and watch Superman, only one male lead comes to your mind-
the late Christopher Reeve who made the DC character his own. Henry Cavill
couldn't match upto Reeve's Superman though. However director James Gunn
makes this Superman as fresh and racy as he could with tongue-in-cheek
crispy dialogues thus making the film watchable. He also does not waste any
time in building up the characters but sums up everything in one-of-a-kind
write-up in the beginning of the film. He also keeps in touch with today's
social media but disappoints in the post credit scenes that the audience
eagerly waits for. Yes, he ups the ante with a spectacular and tension filled
climax. A new character of Krypto, the dog of Superman's cousin, Supergirl, is another
highlight.
The country Boravia that is attacking its neighbouring country
Jahranpur, is stopped by Superman (David Corenswet) resulting in him getting
into the bad books of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Actually Lex is into a
secret deal with the Boravian President Vasil Glarkos (Zlatko Buric). Lex
orders Ultraman to attack Superman and also starts a campaign of defaming
Superman, the ultimate target being to destroy Superman. Lex hits a lottery
when he retrieves a message sent by Superman's biological parents. But Superman,
who leads a double life as Clark Kent working for The Daily Planet, is also in
a relationship with his colleague Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) which turns sour.
In the meantime, Superman is arrested as the allegations against him reach
a crescendo.
David Corenswet has done quite well because the story is brand new.
Today's generation may root for him as he brings his own into the character.
Nicholas Hoult is brilliant as the antagonist. You will love to hate him. He is
as powerful as the superhero. Rachel Brosnahan looks lovely and is too good. As
Mr. Terrific, Edi Gathegi is superb and springs a surprise. Maria Gabriela de
Faria as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen are
wonderful and make a tremendous impact. As Green Lantern, Nathan Fillion is
miscast but Isabela Merced does well as the Hawkgirl. Zlatko Buric goes
overboard which is required for his character. Milly Alcock as Supergirl appears in a cameo.
Cinematography by Henry Braham is jaw-dropping and so is the VFX. Action
is slick and violent.
Wish the film could have been released during the summer holidays for
more and more effective footfalls. But still the film is full of entertainment
so just go and enjoy.
