Cast: ‘Super star’ Rajnikanth, ‘King’ Nagarjuna, Soubin
Shahir, ‘Real star’ Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram Special
appearance: Aamir Khan & Pooja Hegde
Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj knows the pulse of the audience
and keeps on churning massy movies on and on. He makes the viewers go on an
entertaining ride despite being tedious at certain points. His films are long
enough to make you squirm in delight in your seats and he makes sure every
scene is ‘paisa vasool’. The leading characters are glorified and he makes them
‘larger than life’ avatars. Coolie is no different from his other films. At
certain times you do feel that it’s getting stretched too far and confusing and
that is where he earns the minus points for being messy. But overall, he
doesn’t give you a chance to think about the proceedings that is unfolding in
front of your eyes. He packs it with enough ‘masala’.
Deva Mansion is a hostel like facility which is run by Deva
(Rajnikanth) in Chennai. He is like an elder brother to his staff. One day news
arrives that his old friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) has passed away due to
cardiac arrest. Reaching the latter’s place Deva finds out that Rajasekhar was
actually murdered. Upon further
enquires, it is revealed that Rajasekhar was creator of a device that could not
be patented as it was deemed dangerous. However, the device landed in the hands
of a dreaded underworld businessman-cum-don Simon (Nagarjuna) which helped the
latter no ends. To find out the truth about Rajasekhar’s death, Deva smartly
gets into Simon’s gang. In this quest, he is helped by Rajasekhar’s eldest
daughter Preethi (Shruthi Haasan). But there is a twist.
You just marvel at
Rajnikanth as how even at this age he can pull up such massy scenes and
entertain the public. His younger avatar will be lapped up by the audience.
Nagarjuna give a rocking performance as the antagonist. But the scene stealer
and the biggest surprise of the film is Soubin Shahir who essays the role of
Dayal a fully crooked police officer who plays a double game. Complimenting him
is Rachita Ram who is brilliant. Upendra as the silent yet lethal Kaleesh,
Deva’s right - hand man, lends swagger to his character. Shruthi Haasan is ok.
Aamir Khan as Dahaa comes right in the end. His cameo is too good and is not
out of sync. Pooja Hegde looks glamorous in the ‘Monica’ song.
In 1983, Amitabh Bachchan came out with Coolie which had
created mass hysteria and now Rajnikanth Coolie is nothing short of mass
frenzy.
