Amardeep is significant in Rajesh Khanna’s career because firstly it came at a time when Kaka was reeling under a lot of flops and secondly it revived his career. From this film a lot of his films in the following years became big hits. Amardeep has one of Kaka’s best performances to date and should be revisited. Truly regal especially in the climax.

Raja (Rajesh Khanna) is the adopted son of large hearted underworld kingpin (Ashok Kumar) and after the latter’s death inherits the entire property. He also looks after the Don’s daughter Lata (Deepa) and loves her dearly as his own sister. But wealth and power makes him arrogant and he sets eyes on his servant Ramu Kaka’s (A.K. Hangal) daughter Radha (Shabana Azmi) who is in love with a very poor man Kishan (Vinod Mehra). Ramu Kaka instructs Radha not to meet Kishan. On meeting Kishan and getting to know his past, Raja’s attitude changes.

The film was Kaka’s show all the way but there was also a sympathetic performance by Deven Verma who played Rahim, Raja's driver-cum-confidante. Shabana Azmi & Vinod Mehra were passable in their respective characters. Newcomer Deepa (from South) as Lata went overboard with sudden rants in the pre-climax. Oh yes, there also was Mithun Chakraborty in a miss-if-you-blink role as Sajan the fiancé of Lata.

Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music had some good songs like ‘Halki ki kasak masak’, ‘Koi na tere pehle thi’ & ‘Tum nahin maanoge’.
