The Internet revenge confuses

Rating: 1.5*

Director Dibakar Banerjee is known for making satirical and path-breaking films. His LSD released in 2010 spoke about the abuse of CCTV footage and spy cams. In LSD 2, Banerjee is all out to take revenge on the Internet explosion. He presents the Internet as an ugly form of an open book for everyone-  featuring live streams, reality shows, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, news shows, and metaverse. He deceives the viewers with human point-of-view shots. He also uses a subplot inspired by a school in Gurgaon in a very subtle way which brings out the atrocities of seniors bullying the juniors who had created memes about the seniors.

LSD2 basically features three stories chaptered ‘Like’, ‘Share’ & ‘Download’. The first chapter focuses on a trans woman Noor (Paritosh Tiwari) and her estranged mother (Swaroopa Ghosh) in a Bigg Boss like reality show called Truth ya Dance where the ratings are basically a farce.

The second story is about a transgender janitor Kullu (Bonita Rajpurohit) who works at Ojaswi Udyog Limited (which caters to transgenders and works in the metro station) under the leadership of Lovina Singh (Swastika Mukherjee) who faces a sexual assault.

Finally, the third part of the film is about an 18-year-old gamer Shubham (Avinash Singh) who is on the verge of an influencer superstardom but is shocked and rocked when a sex video of him and another man is leaked online. Despite his saying that the video is fake, no one is ready to buy his version. How the three lives are rocked forms the crux of Banerjee’s film.

The performances by the young actors especially Abhinav Singh as the Game Paapi are superb. Bonita Rajpurohit and Paritosh Tiwari essay their difficult roles with utmost ease. Swastika Mukherjee is brilliant and Swaroopa Ghosh is commendable. Anu Sardar Malik as Prem Dhesi, Tusshar Kapoor as Tusshar, and Sophie Chowdry as Sophie playing the judges in the reality show are okay. Mouni Roy as herself as the compère of the reality show is lovely.

Dibakar focuses a lot on cyberbullying and gender phobia, especially the transgender ones but the result is an absolute mess. Unlike LSD, LSD2 doesn’t join the dots in the end. Dibakar has just used LSD 2 to vent his anger on the Internet. The film ends up being too niche and too confusing to make a noise at the box office.
