Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Dalip Tahil. Rakhee Gulzar, Siddharth Ray
Baazigar,
released on November 12, 1993, is a typical 90’s entertaining film. In this peak
Abbas-Mustan cult classic Shah Rukh Khan is a psychologically scarred man out
to get revenge and kill the man who destroyed his family (both emotionally and
financially).
It won 3 Filmfare awards for best screenplay, best actor, and best
music. The soundtrack is simply great, full of catchy and classic songs from
Yeh kaali kaali Aankhen, Ai mere humsafar, Chhupana bhi nahin aata, to Kitaben
bahut si and Baazigar o baazigar. The screenplay was adapted from the 1991
Matt Dillon film, A Kiss Before Dying, which itself was adapted from Ira Levin’s
1953 novel of the same name. Shah Rukh Khan gives an excellent performance, going
absolutely insane in the last 15 minutes.
There’s a standout scene during the song Kitaben bahut si, where Shah Rukh
Khan, with a towel wrapped around his legs, plays tennis where it’s evident
that King Khan is trying to imitate Charlie Chaplin’s way of moving and he quite succeeds
in doing so.
Shah Rukh Khan gives a great performance, and so does Kajol and Dalip Tahil (in what would be his most famous role to date). Rakhee, Shilpa Shetty and Siddharth Ray are OK. Johnny Lever’s parts mostly feel forced. Filled with iconic dialogues, Baazigar is a campy and highly enjoyable film.
