Sujoy Ghosh & Jaideep Ahlawat make this film a riveting watch

Cast: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Vijay Verma, Saurabh Sachdeva, Naisha Khanna

Rating: 3.5*

Streaming On: Netflix

Director Sujoy Ghosh, after the stupendous success of Kahaani (2012) & Badla (2019) has taken upon such gripping subjects that make the viewer sit up and take notice. Adapted from the Japanese novel ‘The Devotion Of Suspect X’ by Keigo Higashino, ‘Jaane Jaan’ grips you with Ghosh’s treatment and some brilliant performances by the lead characters. He paces the film with ease yet keeps you on the edge of the seat, stunning you with an unexpected twist in the end. Yes, there are bound to be comparisons with Ghosh’s other films, but that’s another subject altogether.

Set in Kalimpong, Maya D’Souza (a fascinating Kareena Kapoor Khan) lives with her daughter Tara (Naisha Khanna). She runs Tiffin, a food joint that is frequented by her Maths teacher neighbour Naren Vyas (an outstanding Jaideep Ahlawat) to pick up his regular parcel of egg fried rice. He has feelings for the single mother but cannot summon up the courage to tell her. Maya’s peaceful life in the small hill station goes into turmoil with the entry of Inspector Ajit Mhatre (a fine Saurabh Sachdeva). When he is found dead Maya becomes the prime suspect and Naren comes to her rescue. When the investigating officer Karan Anand (a pleasing Vijay Varma) who also happens to be a college friend of Naren’s comes in search of Ajit he smells something fishy.

The film abounds in a lot of old retro songs that have been used in the background barring the title song ‘Aa Jaane Jaan’ which adds to the mood of the film. Another plus is the superlative cinematography by Avik Mukhopadhyay. Jaane Jaan is another feather in the cap for Sujoy Ghosh who keeps you hooked till the end. The brilliant performances by the lead actors with a mind-blowing Jaideep Ahlawat as the soft-spoken shy maths teacher should make you go for it!
