An overdose of cheesiness and bad filmmaking.

Cast: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan, Celine Dion, Steve Oram, Russell Tovey

Rating: 2/5

At the start of the film, there’s a close-up shot of Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ face as she watches her lover die in slow-motion, and that’s basically everyone’s face as they watch this film: a face showing extreme sadness. The film is so predictable and so cheesy, corny, and cringy that it is no viewer’s delight which rom-coms are usually meant to be.

The key to a healthy relationship is not hiding the direst things from your significant other, and the key to a good rom-com is hiding a dire thing and then waiting for the other person to find out about it and overreact; this follows the same formula but for Celine Dion! She plays herself and is also a sort of love guru with no facial expressions to speak of.

Adapted from the German book ‘SMS für Dich’ and the film of the same name, Love Again starts off decently enough but by the end becomes a bland rom-com. There are a lot of weird directing choices scattered throughout the film which don’t really make sense. There are also some weird shots towards the ending like the dolly shot circling around Chopra Jonas and Heughan kissing which feels very out of place.

The direction here is like any other rom-com; it feels as if some AI was made to watch too many rom-coms in a row and then spit out a new one for Sony.

The performances are average with Dion at her worst with the wooden Heughan in the runners up position. Chopra Jonas is the only one doing some decent acting here.

Love Again is meant only for die-hard cheesy rom-com fans and the hopeless romantics.
