Body shaming is a nasty habit people use to
put fat or skinny people down. They become the butt of jokes bordering on sheer
cruelty demoralizing the victim to such an extent that it has often ended in
tragedy. Not so for the heroine in Fatafati. Comfortable with the rolls of fat around
her body Phullora Bhaduri (Ritabhari) lives in loving harmony with her husband (Abir
Chatterjee), mother-in-law (Soma Chakraborty) and brother-in-law.
Her dreams of becoming an ace fashion designer
were cut short after marriage. But that doesn’t stop her from dreaming and translating those
dreams into reality by making designer blouses for her friendly neighbourhood girlfriends, most of who are heavy like her and care two hoots about the problem.
Unfortunately, everyone does not share their positive outlook, particularly ‘Biki Sen’ (Swastika Dutta) the local shrew who considers it her
birthright to make fun of Phullora and her obesity.
The resourceful Phullora lands up being an Insta
XL queen Miss Fatafati with millions of followers and offers of endorsements
for big brands as a fashion influencer. But when her husband loses his job and their
loving relationship shows signs of strain, she has to make some tough decisions
about her life.
Though a great concept on paper, director
Aritra Mukherjee cannot quite translate Fatafati into a winning and promising
idea on screen. Performances, however, are good with the entire cast pitching in with sincere
and honest acting. Abir underplays his role as the supportive husband but it
looks too convenient. See the film if you must for the sparkling Ritabhari who
lives and breathes the role of the fat housewife with dreams in her eyes. She owns
each frame from the word go, having actually gained 25 kilos to get into the skin of the character!
