Satires on the elite class aren’t a new thing, there have been many examples: Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate, the list goes on, but Östlund’s film mixes Titanic with Cast Away mixed with a bit of Slaughtered Vomit Dolls and it is a damn fun time for the viewer.
Östlund’s film starts with an interviewer
interviewing a group of male models where his satire begins with the joke that
Balenciaga models look down on their customers while H&M models are with the
customers in their social class. This scene is funny as well but is nowhere as
funny as what is about to come. The film is not for everyone to stomach. But after watching the film it
comes as no surprise that it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year.
Models Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi
Dean in her last starring role before her untimely death in August 2022) are
invited for a luxury cruise with a rogues’ gallery of super-rich passengers. At
first, all appears Instagrammable, but the cruise ends catastrophically and the
group finds itself marooned on a desert island.
Östlund’s direction should put him at
the top of his game. The performances are excellent with Woody Harrelson in his
limited screen time being the highlight.
Triangle of Sadness is an excellent satire
that deserves to be checked out.
