David F. Sandberg’s earlier outing, Shazam
was an entertaining affair, but Shazam! Fury of the Gods is something that should
never have been made. An overbloated unfunny film exactly like every MCU film, the
direction is amateurish and unmotivated. The film seems to lack any vision
behind it and feels like it was generated by an AI who watched a lot of Marvel
films on repeat and then had to come up with something that resembled it.
Billy Batson and his foster siblings, who
transform into superheroes by saying “Shazam!”, are forced to get back into
action and fight the Daughters of Atlas, whom they must stop from using a
weapon that could destroy the world.
The DCEU was on the rise after Snyder’s
Justice League and Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but after the likes of Black Adam
and now Shazam! Fury of the Gods, seems to go downhill yet again.
It is good to see Lucy Liu as the
antagonist after such a long time but she is wasted, and so is Helen Mirren.
