Tommy Wirkola’s latest film might seem fun as a concept on paper, but when made into a devastatingly 111-minute-long film, it quickly turns into a snooze-fest.
When a team of mercenaries breaks into a
wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage, the
team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds,
and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.
Starring David Harbour and produced by
David Leitch, the trailer looked promising. But to be honest it IS violent but far
from funny. It’s a film that doesn’t take itself seriously it’s a mess and the
worst thing of all, a boring one at that.
The film starts with Santa sitting in the
bar, chugging down alcohol and talking to the bartender and a mall Santa, and
from this very scene itself, it’s pretty evident that the film packs some good
jokes and a Ho-Ho-whole lot of bad ones. Harbour steals the show as the bad-ass
Santa who curses every few minutes, and whenever he’s on-screen, the film’s vaguely entertaining. There are a lot of scenes that could’ve been cut
similar to Leitch’s Bullet Train, and this feels way longer than it has the
right to.
Tommy Wirkola’s direction is below average
and amateurish when it comes to R-rated action comedies. The screenplay from
Josh Miller and Patrick Casey is straight-out bad. The performances are average
all around. The cinematography is basic for an action film which the slow-mo
shots being the highlight.
Violent Night deserves to be seen at night
when you can doze off in the middle of the film.
