Entertaining cat-and-mouse thriller

Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Madhav, Sumit Gahlawat, Mohd Talib, Allan Bazil Monterio, Harsh Chhaya, Malaika Arora, Nora Fatehi

Rating: 3/5

Ayushmann Khurrana’s third film of the year – he is also turning into Akshay Kumar with the number of films he’s doing per year now – is a different film for this socially aware star, yet he’s able to pull it off pretty well with a chiselled bod, flexing his muscles effectively and that too sans any heroine!

Ayushman plays Maanav Khurana, who at 30, is at the peak of his career. Unfortunately, he gets embroiled in an accidental death while filming in Mandothi village in Haryana. From being a household name, the superstar is now on the run, living in hiding in London.

An Action Hero possess a kinetic energy that only Edgar Wright’s films have – a restless feel to them; so is this film a good Edgar Wright film imitation? While it may be that, it’s also unique for a Bollywood film with its themes of stardom – the result of all this?

You are assured of a fun time at the theatre as there’s not a single moment in An Action Hero where it gives you time to think. Isn’t that the most important rule for making a fun film? Ayushmann is perfect for a role like this and while this might not be his regular cup of tea, he shines along with the others in the star cast. Jaideep Ahlawat’s (Bhoora Solanki) facial expressions are enough to get a chuckle from the viewer. The actors parodying real-life news anchors are a laugh riot, particularly the one screeching “the country wants to know” like you know who!

The humour lies in the dialogues which are both quick and witty. Those not paying attention will miss out on this important aspect which drives the film.

Anirudh Iyer’s direction is excellent by Bollywood standards. Neeraj Yadav’s screenplay is average with the dialogues being the highlight. The cinematography by Kaushal Shah is at times stylistic and basic the rest of the time. Watch out for the hilarious cameo by Akshay Kumar and of course the sizzling hot Malaika Arora and Nora Fatehi item numbers. Two evergreen numbers RDB’s ‘Bach ke rehna re baba’ and Biddu’s ‘Aap jaisa koi’ add to the flavour.

An Action Hero is a film that may feel a bit long but won’t leave you bored.
