Rating: 3*
When you have an Ayushmann Khurrana film you tend to look for something different. Here’s an actor who takes risks and chooses topics or rather taboo topics that end up with a social message. In Doctor G too, Khurrana addresses a topic of a gynaecologist who is male and as Shefali Shah’s character in the movie says ‘Doctors are doctors, be a male or a female’. The moment such films on doctors’ release you are transported to the now classic Munnabhai MBBS. However, Dr G falls a little short on that account.
Uday Gupta (Ayushmann) is a medical student
residing in Bhopal with his mother Shobha (a brilliant Sheeba Chadha) is not
able to get through his favourite stream - orthopaedics because of low marks.
He agrees to take up gynaecology reluctantly after his elder orthopaedic cousin
Ashok (Indraneil Sengupta) asks him to keep on studying for orthopaedics while
working in Bhopal Medical College as a gynaec. He is often rebuked by the head
of department Dr. Nandini Sivastava (the ever-graceful and dependable Shefali
Shah) as not being passionately involved as a doctor. He feels that he does not
understand women and because of that his girlfriend Richa breaks up with him.
During his course, Uday gets friendly with Fatima (a beautiful Rakul Preet
Singh) and starts showing interest in gynaecology.
Director Anubhuti Kashyap has handled the
taboo topic of the female reproductive system and also the sensitive track
between Shobha and Kavya (the surprise of the film Ayesha Kadukar) very well.
But, in doing so he has also left a lot of gaps unanswered. The film only
focuses on Ayushmann and in doing so one actually forgets Rakul Preet in the
pre-climax. Similarly, the track of Shefali Shah should have also been properly
addressed.
