The first Gaston Roberge Memorial lecture by Dr. Gopalan Mullik and the release of the book “A Legend of Our Time – Gaston Roberge” was held recently at Nandan lll.

Organised by Chitrabani in collaboration with the Federation of Film Societies of India (Eastern Region), the chief guest for the occasion was renowned filmmaker Sekhar Das who released the book. Dr. Mullik is a senior faculty at the Dept. of Mass Communication, St. Xavier’s University. The guest of honour was Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay, former Professor of Film Studies at Jadavpur University and a film theoretician.

“Gaston Roberge - a Legend of Our Time” is a labour of love, inspired by his life, works and contribution to modern society in general, and media in particular. He is credited with pioneering film academia in India as well as cultivating and nurturing several generations of cineastes and filmmakers. The book is a collection of articles written by authors who have had long associations with Fr. Roberge, and Chitrabani he founded. They include articles by Father PJ Joseph, Father Felix Raj, Dr Gopalan Mullik, Ruchir Joshi, Ashok Chatterjee, Subha Das Mollick, Brian Balen, Anjali Monteiro, Ravi Shankar Ojha, Myron J Pereira, Sutapa Biswas, Father Julian S Das, Althea Phillips, Ashijit Ganguly and Father Lourduraj. What makes this book unique is that these stories have been probably told for the first time. Each of them reveals different facets of Roberge’s fascinating personality over the years and how he singlehandedly shaped their way of looking at films.

“With this book Chitrabani has embarked on a journey to treasure and preserve for posterity what Fr. Roberge had given to us,” added Fr Joseph, director of Chitrabani.

Chitrabani is the oldest media training institute in Eastern India established in October 1970, as an extension service of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. It was the vision of Fr. Gaston Roberge, one of the few media scholars in the country that gave birth to Chitrabani. Film maestro, late Satyajit Ray was advisor of Chitrabani since its inception and the founder-member of Chitrabani Society.
