The School of Applied Science & Technology, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), WB organised APPSCICON22 – an interdisciplinary conference “of the students, for the students, and by the students” recently.
The aim of this conference was to foster project/
research-based learning among UG and PG students as well as early-stage PhD
scholars by providing them with a professional platform for the presentation
and exchange of ideas through lively interactions with peers and mentors. To
spark off interdisciplinary ideation and collaborative initiative, MAKAUT has
invited contributions from the entire spectrum of applied science &
technology.
APPSCICON22 was inaugurated on May 27 by the Vice-Chancellor
of MAKAUT and the chief patron of the conference Prof. (Dr.) Saikat Maitra at
the main campus of MAKAUT in Haringhata in Nadia district, West Bengal. The
Conference Chair Prof Sukhendu Samajdar and the students and faculty of the
School were actively involved to make the event a grand success.
He expressed his happiness that after the pandemic has come
under control, it has been possible to organize a conference of this kind. He
said, “The students, guided by the faculty of the School of Applied Science
& Technology has organized this multidisciplinary conference on the campus
of our University. Their motivation is to foster the spirit and practice of Research/ project-based
learning, Interdisciplinary ideation, and Learning by doing. Let me congratulate their effort which incidentally
celebrates the freedom from the restrictions and monotony of their lives during
the last two years of the covid19 pandemic. I wish this conference a
rejuvenating success.”
At the inaugural session, the General Chair of the
Conference Dr. Partha Pratim Lahiri, Respected Registrar of MAKAUT pointed
out, “Multidisciplinary activity is a signature feature of a modern university
following the UGC mandate. I am glad to see that AppSciCon22 – the national
conference organized by the students under the guidance of the faculty members
of the School of Applied Science & Technology – has internalized this
multidisciplinary spirit and included in its scope the full range of subject
areas of applied science. Moreover, the conference will be conducted in
multiple modes – onsite poster presentation, onsite oral presentation, and
online oral presentation. That reflects an inclusive spirit as well.”
The Conference Chair Prof Sukhendu Samajdar,
Ph.D. and Director, School of Applied Science & Technology, MAKAUT, WB
said, “Conferences are mostly arranged for faculty members and scholars. Very
few are exclusively dedicated and designed for students. This is what we have
attempted to do. Most of the participants are PG and UG students, then scholars
and faculty members.”
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Banasri
Basu Physics and Applied Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute,
Kolkata. She gave an excellent presentation on "The Story of
Universality in the Urban World". The main theme was, the shifting of rural
population to urban areas follows a universal pattern, mostly set by Pareto Law
and Zipf's Law. Such studies are very important for policy prescriptions,
especially to achieve Sustainable Development Goals set by the United
Nations. Along with mega cities, small and mid-sized cities are also
gaining importance and the study recommends including such cities also.
Actually, it is an interdisciplinary study including Physics, Statistics,
Information Science, and Economics.
