Kolkata: The iconic Victoria Memorial was draped with the 7500 square feet Indian National flag to commemorate the country’s 75th Independence Day. The Tricolour's journey started on April 25 this year after it was unfurled at an altitude of 16,500 feet from Mt. Rhenock in Sikkim to Darjeeling, where it was unfurled at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute on International Yoga Day on June 21.

The West Bengal governor, Jagdeep Dhankhar, dedicated the Indian flag measuring 7,500 square feet and weighing 70 kgs, paying tribute to the freedom fighters of the country on Independence Day. The event was held at Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial Hall and co-hosted by Indiatourism and the HMI, Darjeeling.
As many as 750 saplings were also planted on the premises of Victoria. Dhankhar received the guard of honour by the CISF and hoisted the National Flag, with a rendition of the National Anthem by the Army Band.
“The Victoria Memorial Hall is privileged to collaborate with India Tourism Kolkata and HMI, Darjeeling, in having this unique celebration of India@75, with the icon of the city and one of the grandest buildings of imperial India being draped in a 7500 sq ft national flag, in the honourable governor’s presence. The irony of history cannot be missed by anybody in this symbolic and spectacular event,” Jayanta Sengupta, curator of Victoria Memorial, said.

HMI principal group captain Jai Kishan said the 7,500sqft National flag was conceived to pay tribute to the national freedom fighters who fought for the country’s Independence.

“The Government of India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in all corners of the country. We feel honoured to partner with Victoria Memorial Hall, the most visited museum in India, and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, in a historical event where a titanic Tricolour is being dedicated to the Nation by the Governor,” Sagnik Chowdhury, Regional Director (East), Ministry of Tourism, said.
