An operating system that can very well compete with Microsoft Windows! Yes, OSUM has been indigenously developed by the Information Technology Cell of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), WB. Moreover, it is not expensive unlike Microsoft's Operating System, but can be procured totally free of cost.

OSUM has been developed under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Saikat. At the launching programme of OSUM on August 15, Prof. Maitra said that such open source software are the need of the hour. OSUM can be used by all free of cost which will benefit society to a great extent.

The head of the IT Cell Pritimoy Sanyal explained the main features of OSUM in his presentation:

OSUM can be installed in modern as well as old computers, many of which are lying idle. Very often modern Operating Systems cannot be installed in such old machines, as these are equipped with low RAM. The USP of OSUM is that it can be installed in computers having 1GB RAM and Dual Core/ Core 2 Duo processors.

If old computers are re-used it will also reduce e-waste to a great extent. Any electronic device has huge content of lead and other heavy metals. If the computers are used, these will not be scrapped and the amount of e-waste can be controlled in the process.

Due to lack of funds, many schools are forced to buy pirated versions of Microsoft, which eventually get disabled due to anti-piracy policy of Microsoft authorities. There is no such problem with OSUM, as it is totally free.

OSUM is also perfectly suitable for modern computers. OSUM is based on graphical user interface and is equipped with Python, JAVA, C++ and other packages. Thus, it can be used across devices conveniently.
