Kolkata: Around one crore people have been affected in West Bengal and over three lakh houses damaged on Wednesday during Cyclone Yaas’ destructive journey across the state, the West Bengal Chief Minister said. One person died in East Midnapore’s Ramnagar as he went out fishing.

“The situation aggravated and the se turned turbulent sue to the lunar eclipse and high tide. The situation turned worse and the sea swelled and damages were huge in West Bengal. Many villages have been inundated in several districts,” Mamata Banerjee said.  

West Bengal Chief Minister said, “Large areas of East Midnapore, especially Digha, and Kulpi, Kultali and Gosaba in Sunderbans in South 24 Paragans have been inundated. Dams have been broken and huge damages reported according to primary reports.” 

“There has been widespread damage in Digha, Shankarpur, Tajpur and Mandarmani in East Midnapore and at least 15 places including Gosaba, Basanti, Kultali, Namkhana, Sagar, Joynagar, Frazergunj and Patharpratima in South 24-Parganas,” she said.

A primary survey has revealed that as many as 154 embankments have been broken in various villages. Among relief materials, 10 lakh tarpaulins have been sent to 14000 camps and rescue centres. More than 15 lakh people have been evacuated. The number of lives lost were less due to the preparedness of the state government, she added.

A three-member state team, including the West Bengal CM and Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay, will go on an aerial survey in East Midnapore, South and North 24 Parganas districts and then hold administrative meeting for rehabilitation on May 28 and 29.
