Kolkata: ‘Yaas’, the very severe cyclonic storm, may weaken into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday evening. It will turn into a deep depression by Thursday morning, the Director General of IMD, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, said on Wednesday.
‘Yaas’ moved along and off the north Odisha
coast at about 20 km from Balasore with a wind
speed of 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph
between 10.30 to 11.30 am on Wednesday, the IMD said.
It further weakened in the next three hours to a
wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110
kmph in interior Odisha, specially Mayurbhanj district. It is weakening even further into a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of
60-70 kmph in the subsequent six hours. It is expected to reach Jharkhand on Thursday morning
as a deep depression with a wind speed of
50-60 kmph.
Meanwhile, the cyclone has wreaked havoc in
Mayurbhanj district, with extremely heavy
rains and very strong winds, due to the landfall on Wednesday morning.
Damages were reported from Betanati where big
trees were uprooted and had blocked
roads. Multiple teams of ODRAF, Fire Service, NDRF and Odisha Police were pressed into service in different parts of
the district, starting restoration and rescue
operations.
