Kolkata: In the midst of a factional feud in the TMC and large scale defection to the BJP in the Diamond Harbour Constituency, South 24 Parganas its BJP candidate, a  a Trinamool Congress sitting MLA, Dipak Kumar Halder, has been grievously injured after he was allegedly attacked by TMC workers on Friday. Ten more BJP workers were also injured in the incident.

Halder and his party workers, had gone to Haridevpur to campaign, where he was allegedly attacked
with bamboo sticks, rods and other firearms by TMC hoodlums, the Bengal unit of the BJP has claimed.

“Halder has been hospitalized and his condition is serious. Several BJP workers have also been injured,” BJP Bengal unit sources claimed. The attack coincided with the day the TMC MP from Diamond Harbour Abhishek Banerjee is participating in a roadshow in Kultali and the Diamond Harbour Assembly Constituency.

Halder and his 10 supporters have been admitted in government-run Diamond Harbour super-speciality hospital.

BJP workers have organized a sit-in-protest and blocked National Highway 117 in protest against the attack on the BJP candidate,

Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “The TMC is never involved in such attacks. It is a feud between the defected and original BJP workers.”

Halder had recently joined the BJP saying that he was not allowed to work freely in the TMC and there was a lack of respect. The Diamond Harbour Constituency will go to the polls on April 6.
