Actress Hansa Singh, known for her layered
performances and strong screen presence in projects like Goodbye and Criminal
Justice among others, recently opened up about how the craft of acting has
shaped her personality, work ethic and emotional understanding over the years.
Speaking about how inhabiting different characters
has influenced her perspective, Hansa says, “Yes, being observant is a nuance
of an actor. I do observe people and their behaviour. It’s sometimes a very
subtle but important distinction that adds to one’s craft.”
When asked whether acting has made her more
empathetic or cautious, she explains that life itself teaches more than the
camera ever can. “Act in life and life are two different things. I always tell
the world and aspiring actors that we always have been acting in life. The
craft is to own it in front of the camera. Understanding people comes with life
over the years. So today it’s easy to see beyond the obvious,” she shares.
Working with diverse teams and co-actors has also
contributed to her growth. Hansa emphasizes constant learning and humility. “I
am learning till I die. The moment I stop learning I am not living. I have
always been human to onset crew and actors and always learning from them. Every
person, every actor has something to offer.”
However, she admits she keeps her connections
grounded and professional off screen. “I have not evolved personal off screen
relationships. I keep it cordial. I know if I message or call it will be
received well. I am more at ease with my directors as my work has more to do
with them.”
On becoming more sensitive to human traits through
acting, she laughs and says, “I am sensitive, being a Pisces, it’s in my
nature. But I do like to disassociate myself with the character once home.
Playing different characters has helped me know myself more.”
Navigating the industry also requires skills beyond
performance. Hansa reveals that she had to adapt. “I am a creative person, but
in this industry having a good agent is important. I have been pushed to learn
on the job, to talk like a manager and work like an actor. I feel sad talking
about finance as I wish to focus on my craft. But I have learnt to say ‘NO’ if
anything is offered to shortchange my craft and experience.”
For newcomers, her advice is rooted in patience and
self-awareness. “Be focused but not consumed by it. Today’s generation is
smarter, they know the way up the ladder. Advice to serious actors is stay
focused, be patient, work on your craft and not just your beefed-up body. Know
your strengths and weaknesses. Patience is a virtue.”
To maintain emotional balance in a demanding
profession, Hansa has found her own rhythm. “I fall back to my salsa dancing,
travels and life coaching. I disconnect from the world. Life has evolved and so
have I. Now it’s about taking care of myself. I have the luxury to stay away
from toxicity and rejuvenate.”
She adds that solitude has become a healthy space.
“While travelling I don’t talk much except for some work or I let that also
pass. Yes, I have earned that privilege for my sanity. No one else will do that
for me.”
