Director Aditya Dhar focuses on the years 2011, 2014, 2016 and part of
the present situation (which feels like propaganda, yes) yet he exceeds
expectations with the second part of the duology and scales it up to unexpected
heights with tremendous performances and mind-blowing action. He has also kept
the emotional quotient high this time. If the first part laid the foundation,
the second takes Dhurandhar- The Revenge to a new high joining all the missing
dots carefully. The emotional saga of courage, sacrifice, revenge and justice
stay on with you even after the 229 minute film ends. Another highlight is the
taut screenplay that gives you the right amount of twists and when you think
that the film has reached its zenith, in comes another twist raising the bar
yet again. The climax literally ‘blows’ you apart.
The story unfolds in the year 2000 where a 21-year old army
aspirant Jaskirat Singh Rangi (Ranveer Singh) butchers a family of 12 who
had brutally killed his father and gangraped his sisters. After two years in
prison, he is picked up by Ajay Sanyal (R Madhavan) for operation Dhurandhar.
Cut to 7 years later ie in 2009 Jaskirat now Hamza Ali Mazari kills Rehman
Dacait (Akshaye Khanna) on August 11. Arshad Pappu takes over Lyari. Hamza and
Rehman’s younger brother Uzair (Danish Pandor) fight back and Pappu is
butchered by Uzair forcing the Government of Pakistan to arrest him. Hamza
becomes the King of Lyari and as a result he attracts Bade Saab’s attention.
Ranveer Singh is the heart and soul of the film. He has a lot of
dialogues unlike in the first part. Possibly one of Ranveer’s finest acts.
Sanjay Dutt as usual towers with his persona and dialogues. He gives an
exceptional performance. R Madhavan is intense and restrained and gives an
amazing performance. Arjun Rampal is menacing and is excellent. Rakesh Bedi’s
possibly career best- outstanding. Sara Arjun leaves a mark. All the other
supporting actors do also deserve a special mention. There is a special cameo
by one of the leading ladies.
Music by Shashwat Sachdeva is solid and his usage of retro classic songs
are a master stroke. Dialogues are massy and powerful and seeti-maar.
Cinematography and razor sharp editing are nothing short of brilliant.
Go witness the film as a film and not as a propaganda one and you will
not be disappointed.
