Pradip Bothra's Rhapsody in
Colours, his collection of oils on canvas are on display at the Birla Academy
from December 23 to 28.
The renowned art collector and painter held forth
on his paintings in an exclusive chat with Kolkata Konnect on the inaugural day
of the exhibition on December 23.
"Rhapsody in Colours stands for emotion. My
paintings here are an expression of my emotions. They are different, not
conforming to any structure.
I believe in experimental painting. You have
to move with the times. My paintings express what I feel and think. But the
onus is on the viewers. What they perceive about my painting may or may not
match with what I am trying to convey. Life is uncertain and unpredictable and
so is art.
There is a great similarity between my paintings
and human beings. Just like no two humans are the same no two paintings of mine
are the same.
Painting has been my hobby since childhood. I have
grown up with art playing an important part in my life
My grandfather and uncle were renowned painters of their times. Connected with the Swadeshi movement they stuck to water- colours. If they happened to see what I am doing today they may not be very happy with my oils. I did start with water -colours and have painted in 8 to 10 mediums as well.
Among this lot of paintings its really difficult to
choose a favourite but I would go with no 1, no 2 and no 42. They are different
from my other paintings in terms of what I want to express and the colours I
have used.
The biggest reward I get is I enjoy painting.
My message to fellow painters is to bring something
new to art and paint something different something fresh. Don't copy but do
something worthwhile that one would like to go back to."
