The Thursday Murder Club is taken from the best seller by Richard Osman
by the same name that was published in the COVID-era, 2020. Like the book, the
film too is a feel-good inventive crime thriller about four elderly people in a
retirement home who solve crimes defying their age to escape from their mundane
surroundings.
Director Chris Columbus helms this happy mainstream entertainment which
is somewhat bland yet likeable and also speaks about close bonds and assisted
dying. Human trafficking is also touched upon. The best part is that murders do
happen but not shown.
In the retirement facility Coopers Chase, a gigantic stately home for
elders, the residents have various hobbies with The Thursday Murder Club being
the most unusual & striking comprising former MI6 Chief Elizabeth (a
fantastic Helen Mirren), ex-trade unionist Ron (a likeable Pierce Brosnan),
retired psychiatrist Ibrahim (a subtle Ben Kingsley) and the new entrant in the
club a former nurse Joyce (a wonderful Celia Imrie) who has an obsession for
baking lavish cakes. They meet at the jigsaw room every week to discuss about
unsolved crimes provided to them by Elizabeth’s friend Penny, a retired police
officer who herself is now at the palliative care wing. Elizabeth’s husband
Stephen (an unrecognisable Jonathan Pryce) who has dementia is also a resident
and hence Elizabeth has moved in to be with her husband and as her TMC
(Thursday Murder Club) friends she is as full of energy as them. Ian Ventham
(David Tennant) their evil landlord along with business partners Tony Curran
(Geoff Bell) and Bobby Tanner (Richard E Grant) wants to redevelop the
place as luxury flats which starts off a series of murders. The local cops led
by DCI Chris Hudson (a funny Daniel Mays) and WPC Donna de Freitas (Naomi
Ackie) take the help of the TMC led by the determined Elizabeth for
investigation.
The film looks like a kids TV crime show but is still enjoyable with you
rooting for the ‘fab four’. The moral of the story is that old people can do
things quietly and in unison without anyone noticing.
