1980 was a high point in Jeetendra's career from
where he never looked back. Jyoti Bane Jwala was a major highlight in his
career and was a superhit at the box office. Story goes that Jeetendra was
signed by Prakash Mehra for Jwalamukhi along with Waheeda Rehman, Vinod Mehra
and Kader Khan but a fallout between Mehra and Jeetu Saar led the latter to go
to Hyderabad and shoot JBJ along with the three above mentioned stars adding
Moushumi and Sarika as the female leads. The film was shot, completed and released
in record time and went to score big at the Box Office. This was the first
intense and highly emotionally charged role for Jeetendra who also produced the
film under the banner Tirupati Pictures Combine.
The film tells the story of Suraj (Jeetendra) and
Malti (Waheeda Rehman) and before their marriage, Suraj dies in an accident
leaving behind a pregnant Malti. To avoid being shamed, Malti's father
Charandas (Om Shivpuri) shifts to a remote area and throws the newborn baby in
a 'kachhra peti' (dustbin) telling his daughter that the baby was still
born. However, Ram Singh (Satyen Kappu) the driver of a dreaded criminal
Dharmdas (Kader Khan) finds the baby and takes him to his house and adopts the
baby and names him Jyoti. Both he and his wife Parvati (Seema Deo) raise him
like their own. Later they also have a baby girl Asha. Growing up, the society
constantly mocks Jyoti calling him a 'bastard'. In a fit of rage , Jyoti
kills a rich spoilt boy and flees. Years pass, Jyoti (Jeetendra) is now a
dreaded and ferocious criminal going under the name of Jwala (who also has a
tiger Raja as his pet). Malti is married to DSP Bakshi (Shreeram Lagu) and they
have a son Arjun (Vinod Mehra) who is also a Police Officer. How fate brings
Jyoti, Asha, Malti and Arjun forms the crux of the story.
The film has some wonderful performances by Waheeda
Rehman and Moushumi as Anu, the love interest of Jyoti. Sarika as Aha too
deserves a mention. Vinod Mehra and Shreeram Lagu lend support. But the
film belongs to Jeetendra who after this film made the audience notice him as a
serious actor.
Music by Laxmikant Pyarelal was average. The
Kishore-Rafi-Lata song 'Dil Dhadak Raha Hai' was the best of the lot. The song
'Tu Jogan Mein Jogi' was a parody on 'Chal Chal Chal Mere Haathi' sung by
Kishore and Asha was funnily picturised on Vinod Mehra and Sarika. 'Tel Malish
Boot Polish' by Asha and Usha Mangeshkar was a fun song. All in all, the album
was very mediocre.
JBJ was a remake of the Telugu film Katakatala
Rudrayya (1978) which was also directed by Dasari Narayana Rao.
Jeetendra's make-up and action were other
highlights and 'kachhra peti' became the talk of the town. Ever after 45
years the film is a treat with never a dull moment. The cat-and-mouse- game
between Jyoti and Arjun in the second half of the film is highly entertaining
with clapworthy moments.
