The sugar daddy syndrome is a dangerous reality in
today's society. With young boys and girls bereft of the love and attention
they crave from their parents who are too busy in their own lives, sugar
daddies and mommies take the place of the parental figure with benefits. It
appears to be a win win situation for both. The sugar daddy gets to prey on the
vulnerability of the girl old enough to be his daughter and the young girl gets
all the attention she craves along with expensive gifts she can flaunt on social
media. But underneath lurks the danger of sexual exploitation, blackmail and
even violence.
This is what director Abhishek Ganguli has tried to
show in his short film Sugar Daddy. The deal may be sweet but you have to pay a
heavy price for it. By the time you realize that you are trapped it may be too
late to get out.
In the titular role of sugar daddy Vikrant Sanjay
Mishra brings in just the right amount of menace and charm to his character
making it very effective. Barbie Dey who is making her debut as the sugar baby
Millie does a good job of first showing how taken in she is by Vikrant's charm
and pots of money and then her fear when she realizes how badly she has been
trapped by him. Akansha as her bestie Teesta is the voice of her conscience
telling her what is happening is not right and that she needs to get out of the
vicious circle. Piyasi Singha Roy as Mille's single mother who is busy in her
own affair with Sanyal played by Asish and Anita Chinkwani as Vikrant's partner
in crime lend able support.
At just 18 minutes this short film deftly brings
home to the audience the dangers of getting trapped by sugar daddies on the
prowl and is there a way out or not? Perhaps a sequel could answer that
question.
