Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Nikita Dutta, Kunal Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda,
OTT: Netflix
Directors Kookie Gulati & Robbie Grewal makes a fast paced racy film
but with too many illogical cinematic liberties thrown in. Of course you need
to leave your brain at home (oh you are watching the film at home then leave
your brain aside) and try to watch what unfolds. The film is a giveaway right
from the beginning and even the twist in the end is a big yawn. Actually was there any twist at all? Very
predictable. The climax is disappointing . Yes there is a reference to Vijay Anand’s 1967
cult classic Jewel Thief but the reference is similar to Saif’s tribute of
Mahendra Sandhu in Agent Vinod. There is a little bit of Dhoom 2, Mr. Natwarlal
& a few of the heist films that we have witnessed, all thrown in. The film
looks like a jaded project released on OTT. Come on, the smart cop cannot put
two-and-two together and was left wondering why our Jewel Thief has come to
Mumbai? (Ha Ha). To give where it’s due, Jaideep Ahlawat delivers a superb
performance (his expressions are something to watch out for), Saif Ali Khan
looks dashing & Nikita Dutta stunning.
Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat) is a dangerous mobster turned businessman
who wants the crowned ₹500 crore diamond the Red Sun at any cost. He blackmails
the expert jewel thief Rehan Roy (Saif Ali Khan) who is hiding in Budapest to
come to Mumbai and steal the diamond from the latest well equipped state of the
art security system (by the way what was it?), Fortcrest Art Centre museum
where the rock would be displayed. On his heels and trail is the suave cop from
STF, Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor). With his family under threat from Rajan and
STF on his trail, Rehan is in a fix.
Saif is sincere and Jaideep brilliant. They both have equal footage in
the film and underplay their characters. Nikita Dutta as Farrah is good and for
once she is just not a glam doll. She has an important role. Kunal Kapoor holds
his own despite being let down by the writers. His character is in the mould of
Abhishek Bachchan from Dhoom. Meenal Sahu as Nikki, the hacker friend and of
Rehan is good but again not etched out fully. Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Rehan’s
father Jayant Roy, Gagan Arora as Rehan’s brother Avi and Sumit Gulati as
Rajan’s trusted aide Chunky who gets killed by Rajan are fine. As for the
actors who are playing Moosa, and The Prince the less said about them the
better.
The cinematography by Joshi Bhattacharjee is fantastic. The music is
nothing to write home about. The action is simple which is quite unlike the
recent film’s action.
If you have nothing much to do, then you can watch Jewel Thief- The
Heist Begins. But then it is disappointing.
