Kolkata : The Alka Jalan Foundation in Kolkata set the stage for an evocative literary evening as author Narayani Nag unveiled her latest book, Kolkata’s Homemade Homes on April 12. The event brought together an engaged audience of readers, writers, and art and design enthusiasts for a thoughtful exploration of homes, identity, and self-expression.

Kolkata’s Homemade Homes explores people’s homes through a deeply reflective and emotionally nuanced lens, portraying them not just as physical structures but as living expressions of personal identity. Featuring compelling visual documentation by photographer Somenath Sen, the book captures the essence of Kolkata’s homes and the individuals who have transformed ordinary living spaces into powerful expressions of their lives, passions, and identities.

Rooted in Narayani Nag’s personal observations and insights, the book explores themes of creativity, individuality, and self-love. It examines how walls, objects, and spaces can become repositories of memory and meaning, ultimately shaping the way people experience and define themselves.

The evening’s discussion was skillfully moderated by Oindrilla Dutt, who guided the conversation with clarity and depth. She was joined by a distinguished panel that included architect Monica Khosla Bhargava and Iftekhar Ahsan, founder of Calcutta Walks and Calcutta Bungalow. Each panelists reflected on the evolving relationship between architecture, memory, and identity, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in design and living.

The event was organized by AHAVA Communications in collaboration with the AHAVA Readers’ and Writers’ Club, reflecting a shared commitment to nurturing literary culture and fostering meaningful community engagement. The gathering underscored the importance of spaces, both physical and intellectual.

Addressing the audience, Narayani Nag spoke passionately about the significance of creating a home that resonates with one’s inner self. She emphasized the importance of infusing life into walls and spaces, transforming them into reflections of personal journeys. Drawing from her own experiences, she described her home as a nostalgic realm of artistry and creativity, where every element carries a story and every corner holds a soul.

The audience remained actively engaged throughout the session, participating in a lively exchange of ideas and reflections. Attendees expressed appreciation for the authenticity and emotional depth of the discussion, noting how the book resonated with their own experiences of home and belonging.

The evening concluded on a contemplative note, leaving participants inspired to view their own spaces through a more introspective and creative lens.
