Shahid's powerful performance lifts 'Deva'

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Pooja Hegde, Pavail Gulati, Pravessh Rana, Kubra Sait, Meenal Sahu, Girish Kulkarni

'Deva' is a remake of Prithviraj Sukumaran's 2013 Malayalam hit 'Mumbai Police' directed by the same director Rosshan Andrrews. He had impressed a lot with the original and has done the same with the remake. The Hindi adaptation is done keeping the audience in mind as the original had a different angle to the story. Had they kept to the original maybe the film would have been slightly better in terms of storytelling. However, Shahid Kapoor puts in an outstanding performance that is clapworthy (especially in the first half). We see two different shades of the actor. He is brilliant.

Yes, the film is very lengthy and should have been trimmed for better effect. Lots of unanswered questions remain in Deva (screenplay by Bobby Sanjay, Abbas & Hussain Dalal, Sumit Arora, and Arshad Syed) which lets down the film in a big way. The plus is the identity of the killer is a big reveal and a big twist.

Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor) is a rowdy, violent, and arrogant cop who gets embroiled in a complicated murder case. He is very sincere towards his duty as a cop but is also a large-hearted and emotional guy who goes out of his way to help his close ones in need. He even upsets a powerful politician Apte (a delightfully crooked Girish Kulkarni). Dev's senior and brother-in-law DCP Farhan (a good Parrvesh Rana) protects him from all his violence and arrogance. Dev also shares a special bond with his friend ACP Rohan D'Silva (Pavail Gulati in a limited but effective role). During his sister's marriage to Farhan, Dev gets romantically involved with constable Sathaye's honest crime journalist daughter Diya (Pooja Hegde) but a twist in the tale happens when Rohan is killed by a mysterious killer during the latter's felicitation ceremony. Dev cracks the case but meets with an accident which results in amnesia.

Pooja Hegde is fair in her role (of whatever she has). Meenal Sahu as Rebecca, Rohan's fiancee is quite good. Kubra Sait as Dev's junior is wasted in an inconsequential role (why she did it in the first place remains a mystery) and so is Manish Wadhwa.

Jakes Bejoy's background music is tops. The action is top-notch. The cinematography by Amit Roy is wonderful.

If you have not seen the original, this is a time pass.
