Saswata tries hard to recreate the legendary Bhanu Banerjee

Rating: 2*

Director Dr. Krishnendu Chattopadhyay's attempt to re-create the iconic film 'Jamayae Jibanta Manush (1958), starring legendary comedian Bhanu Bandopadhyay, falls flat as it fails to entertain you from scene one. The production value looks too outdated. Using good VFX would have salvaged the film somewhat. Yes, the performance of Saswata Chattopadhyay playing Bhanu Bandopadhyay is what makes the film bearable to watch. Not only does he get the dialect right but he looks a lot like the ace comedian himself, the only redeeming factor for the film. The gags fail miserably and do not evoke any laughter. One dialogue stands out though that 'The old actors and films are the father of today's generation and that is not to be forgotten'. The director also tries to imply a lot about the current situation in our country and takes a dig at the political scenario.

Scientist Samyomay Banerjee (a lacklustre Ambarish Bhattacharya) invents a time machine where one can go back to the past. Going to an event to meet the governor, Banerjee dies in an accident. In heaven, actor Bhanu Banerjee (Saswata) takes a liking for him and investigates as he suspects foul play. Bhanu is determined to send the scientist back and nab the culprits. He along with Samyomay returns to the living world to catch hold of the culprits and get to the actual person who had to die on that particular day the accident happened. What happens thereafter forms the rest of the story.

Actors like Paran Bandhopadhyay (Brahma), Subhashis Mukherjee (Chitragupta), Saheb Chattopadhyay (Indradev) all flit in and out in their respective appearances. Darshana Banik (Suchitra Sen), Basabdatta Chattopadhyay (Ruma Guha Thakurata), and Debolina Dutta (Bhanu Banerjee's wife Neelima Debi) try their best in their respective cameos.

The song 'Jodi Ruper Sagor' picturized in black and white stands out. The song composed by Raja Narayan Deb is lovely.

The audience who ventures in thinking it to be a remake of the original will be in for a rude shock. Only Saswata lightens up the otherwise dull proceedings.
