The devilish imp entertains

Rating: 3*

Inspired by Indian folklore, director Aditya Sapotdar & Maddock Films (Dinesh Vijan) keep up the interest in the horror-comedy-out of-the-box ‘ghost’ stories and continue it in their latest venture ‘Munjya’. The film marks some hilarious situations, good performances, an eerie atmosphere & the scenic beauty of the Konkan countryside which all make for an entertaining film. Yes, there is a social message regarding the consent of love.

The year 1952 in the Konkan countryside, a young Gotya performs black magic to win over a girl Munni who is seven years older than him. Gotya’s mother beats him up and makes him sit for his thread ceremony. A few days later, Gotya takes his younger sister Gita on a quest to sacrifice her. Instead, Gotya dies tragically and because he died within 10 days of his ‘munj’ (thread ceremony), he becomes a Brahmarakshas and a restless spirit who gets trapped inside a tree.

Years later, Gita has now become a grandmother Ajji (Suhasini Joshi) who lives in Pune with her daughter-in-law Pammi (Mona Singh) & grandson Bittu (Abhay Verma) who gets visions of his village and the tree. But he is clueless as neither his grandmother nor his mother have told him anything about Munjya. A visit to his village with his family and his childhood friend Bela (Sharvari) leads Bittu to the same tree where Munjya was trapped. Bittu spots Munjya and vice-versa with the latter now not leaving him. A fun-filled terrifying ride ensues.

There are some delightful performances and topping them is Abhay Verma as the innocent Bittu. He looks too sweet and is extremely convincing in his act. Sharvari as Bela is good. S. Sathyaraj as the eccentric and unpredictable godman Elvis Karim Prabhakar is delightful. As Pammi, Bittu’s mother, Mona Singh leaves a mark. Good to see Suhasini Joshi as Ajji after a long time on the Hindi screen.

Munjya looks too naughty, childlike, and wicked but you can’t help but chuckle in his act. He does everything devilish yet you will like him. And yes! DO NOT MISS the after-the-end credits song. You will be in for a lovely surprise!
