Ruslaan’s patriotism bites the dust

Cast: Ayush Sharma, Sushrii Mishraa, Jagapathi Babu, Vidya Malvade

Rating: 2*

Patriotic films have been beaten to death recently with disastrous results and director Karan L Butani’s Ruslaan joins the bandwagon with the same results. The problem with Ruslaan is that it relies heavily on illogical convenience - you take everything for granted and the ease with which the R&AW agents infiltrate countries is as simple as cheese & chalk. The film is full of slo-mo & stylised action effects and tries to portray Ayush Sharma (playing the titular role of Ruslaan) as the next action star on the lines of the Junior Shroff (both could pass off as long-lost brothers). But Ayush needs to get over his one-dimensional expression. The director tries hard to make the audience idolizestylized our hero but where is the audience? Even the so-called twist in the end is a giveaway.

Jagapathi Babu as a righteous police officer Major Sameer Singh and a loving father to the orphaned Ruslaan is the best in whatever was given to him by way of his character sketch. But why did the makers dub his voice? Surprising! Sushrii Shreya Mishra as Vani looks lovely and also kicks ass as the agent who partners Ruslaan and also plays his love interest. Vidya Malvade as the senior R&AW officer Mantra is passable.

Ruslaan sees his entire family being wiped out by the upright police officer Major Sameer who adopts him and both the latter and his wife (Jaswinder Gardener) dote on the little Ruslaan. But Ruslaan’s only mission in life is to serve his country and prove that a terrorist’s son is not always a terrorist. He then goes after the terrorists single-handedly by defying the orders of his senior R&AW officer Mantra. He goes after Woo a dangerous ex-military-turned-businessman who, aided by Pakistanis, wants to wipe out the whole of Mumbai via a poisonous gas leak which would be a bigger gas leak than the Bhopal gas tragedy.

The film also boasts of some cameos by Nawab Shah (Ruslaan’s biological father), Zafar Iqbal (India’s sleeper agent) & Suniel Shetty as the R&AW chief. But their presence doesn’t make any impact.

The film boasts of high action that defies logic and sticks to the routine patriotic formula.
