Dev Patel’s directorial debut is a raw and powerful film filled with brilliant action sequences that are somewhat rare to come across these days.

Kid is an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

The action sequences look like they were thought out extensively before the shoot, and the hard work that went behind it has certainly paid off. The energy that every scene possesses is remarkable, especially for a debut, and commendable.

The direction is excellent, working perfectly in sync with everything in the film. The performances are good and the screenplay is commendable. While the camera work though disorientating at times, fits in the context of the film.

This doesn’t feel like Dev’s debut as a director, but rather a veteran filmmaker who primarily works in the action genre.

At least a film has been made that has the guts to actually tackle some of the issues plaguing the country, even if superficially.
